3 minutes, 21 seconds Read

At long last, James Gunn has finally revealed the beginning of the first chapter in his new DC Universe.

On January 30th, co-CEOS of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, hosted an event at Warner Brothers Studios for all the press to present part of their DC slate and answer questions. The following day, Gunn posted a video to all social media where he publicly revealed those ten upcoming DC projects and set some records straight.

Current DCEU

First Gunn took time to clarify the current slate of DC films set for 2023 release. He began by addressing the recent release of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and then moved on very quickly to “The Flash”. He confirmed that “The Flash” will create the reboot into the new DCU era. Gunn then addressed that the upcoming “Blue Beetle” would be part of the new DCU and quickly glossed over “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” as the future with Jason Mamoa is still unclear.

Elseworlds

Gunn also mentioned that the franchises such as Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and Todd Philips’ “Joker” would remain separate from the DCU and be considered “Elseworlds”.

Gods and Monsters

Finally, Gunn announced that the title of the first chapter of new projects would be called “Gods and Monsters” and stated that what was revealed was only half of it.

Creature Commandos

The first upcoming project that was revealed was an animated series called, “Creature Commandos”. Gunn wrote all seven episodes and teased that the show’s characters could be seen in both animation and live action and continue to be played by the same actors.

Waller

Gunn revealed a live-action TV series called “Waller”. The series sees Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller for her own headline series where she will team up with the characters of “Peacemaker”.

Superman: Legacy

Gunn then moved onto “the true beginning of the DCU” being “Superman: Legacy”. The feature film is still being written by Gunn and received an official release date of July 11th, 2025.

Lanterns

Gunn officially revealed the already teased live-action series, “Lanterns”. The show will follow both Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the Green Lanterns of Earth and follows the same tone of the series, “True Detective”.

The Authority

Gunn then transitioned back into the obscure with a new film, “The Authority”. The film will bring the WildStorm characters into the new DCU to interact with other core characters.

Paradise Lost

He introduced “Paradise Lost”. The live-action TV series is set before Wonder Woman’s birth in Themyscira and has a similar feel as “Game of Thrones”.

The Brave and the Bold

Gunn will introduce the DCU’s new Dark Knight in “The Brave and the Bold”. The upcoming film will see an already established Batman meeting his actual son Damian Wayne.

Booster Gold

Gunn announced a live-action TV series for a fan favorite character, “Booster Gold“. The series will be focusing on “the superhero story of imposter syndrome” much similar to the comics.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

The next movie announced was “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. The film will be heavily based on Tom King’s Supergirl run and is a big Science Fiction epic.

Swamp Thing

Gunn revealed the final film of the announcement video, “Swamp Thing”. It is said to be “a very dark horror story” but will still be part of the larger DCU.

Connected DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran made it clear that their plan is to make a proper connected DC Universe. All the projects revealed (even if a little obscure) will begin to point in the direction of a greater story. Gunn exclaimed at the end “Storytelling is always king!” proving how dedicated he is to this DCU as he is slowly piecing together in his 8-10 year plan. We trust in the vision of James Gunn and Peter Safran and cannot wait to see more of what they are planning going forward.
