Lanterns Introduces Our Favorite Space Cops

During DC’s press reveal James Gunn and Peter Safran finally expanded more on a previously announced project now titled “Lanterns”. The TV series will focus on fan favorite Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Tone

When talking about the show both Safran and Gunn stated,

“It’s going to be with HBO Max, as all of our series are that we’re going to talk about today. It is more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery—

—that leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different movies and television shows. We find this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically supercops on “Precinct Earth.”

James Gunn

The story is going to weave back and forth between the films and the television shows.”

The series will clearly have an important role in the larger story of the DCU and finally make use of Green Lanterns in live action. In James Gunn’s video announcement he also mentioned that “we have a few more Lanterns peppered in there” which could mean possible cameos from characters like Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and more.

Since Ryan Reynolds’ interpretation of Hal Jordan in the 2011 film, the character’s reputation has been tarnished in live action and underutilized. Hopefully “Lanterns” can do better than its predecessor and change the audience perspective of the franchise.

Casting

Given we have not had a live action Hal Jordan or John Stewart in a long time here are our top fancasts for the characters.

For Hal Jordan, we believe Miles Teller would make a great choice. Given his recent role as Rooster in “Top Gun: Maverick“, he could really sell the arrogant military pilot aspect of Hal Jordan.

In terms of John Stewart, our top pick is Aldis Hodge. Although the actor just made his debut in the recent “Black Adam” as Hawkman, we believe he would be a great pick to play the will powered John Stewart.

Expectations

Given how long it has taken for fans to receive a new Green Lantern property, expectations are high for this upcoming series. We hope James Gunn and Peter Safran will do the characters justice and make these characters fan favorites in live action.
