“The Mandalorian” has returned with its long awaited third season and served a fantastic opening episode.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Story
Mando and Grogu are back and on a new quest. After Din Djarin removed his helmet last season, the Armorer instructed him to return to the decimated Mandalore and bathe in its waters.
Mando and Grogu then go to a now beautiful Nevarro and reunite with the Greef Karga who has become High Magistrate. Mando helps Greef defeat some pirates in an intense standoff. Mando seeks to revive IG-11 so he can navigate Mandalore with a droid he trusts but things go haywire when IG-11 returns to its default settings and tries to kill Grogu. This leads Greef to introduce Mando to Babu Frik so he can attempt to fix IG-11. Mando and Grogu leave Nevarro and immediately get into an exceptional dogfight.
Finally, Mando visits a resentful Bo-Katan where he tells her about his quest of redemption and she gives him some info needed about Mandalore.
The Good
Purrgil
One of the coolest scenes and easter eggs during the episode was Grogu seeing the Purrgil in hyperspace. Purrgil were first introduced in “Star Wars Rebels” and were known for their tie with Ezra Bridger towards the end of the show. It was very exciting to see them adapted in live action.
Greef Karga
The standoff scene between Greef Karga, Mando, and the pirates was absolutely exceptional. It was a great reminder of the Western themes that this series began with and the scenes’ tension demonstrated that. One funny thing I noticed was that there were tiny droids holding Karga’s cape at all times due to his title as High Magistrate.
Babu Frik
The scene between Mando, Grogu and Babu Frik was absolutely hilarious and continues to show the fun that can be had from alien creatures in the Star Wars franchise.
Dogfight
The dogfight in space was so cool and showed off not only how awesome Mando’s new ship is, but also how smart of a pilot he is. The way he was able to outsmart the pirates and defeat them was so creative. The Mandalorian theme playing alongside the parts where Mando was winning was well scored and raised up the action sequence significantly.
Review
“The Mandalorian” received a fantastic season premiere that sets up the story for Mando and Grogu’s new quest very well. Episode one is 9/10.
