DC Studios has finally given us our first look at the upcoming film, “Blue Beetle” with a first trailer.
Story
The film will follow Jaime Reyes as he gains possession of the scarab that makes him the Blue Beetle and learns to be a hero. Xolo Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes and will take up the role of the third Blue Beetle. Jaime is seen going to the Kord Industries for a job, but Penny Kord gives him the scarab instead to hide it presumably from her aunt, Victoria Kord (played by Susan Sarandon). The scarab bonds to Jaime is a somewhat horrifying way and we get our first official look at the Blue Beetle suit in action. The rest of the trailer shows more scenes from the film and Jaime’s journey as Blue Beetle.
Blue Beetle Suit
The Blue Beetle suit looks absolutely fantastic and full of life. It looks so real and old set photos show how well it was done practically.
Not to mention the use of his powers look amazing. In recent years nanotech has constantly been used in comic book movies and tv shows for just putting on/removing masks. This movie will clearly be the exception demonstrating how nanotech should look in a character’s superpowers.
Some of the coolest uses of these abilities were when Jaime made a giant sword to prepare for battle and when he made his iconic flight wings to save himself from hitting the water.
Reyes Family
It is clear that Jaime’s family will have a heavy impact in this film but the two members that standout are George Lopez who plays Uncle Rudy and Belissa Escobedo who plays Jaime’s sister, Milagro Reyes. Given they were there for Jaime’s bonding to the scarab it is likely they will help him with his transition into a superhero.
Easter Eggs
We also get some amazing easter eggs towards the end of this trailer. Towards the end we see Uncle Rudy piloting “The Bug”. This floating vehicle was created by the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord.
It is apparent that Ted Kord is missing in this film but he still has a heavy influence. His presumed daughter, Jenny, brings Jaime the scarab and shows the tech of Ted Kord. We not only see “The Bug” but also Kord’s iconic/classic looking Blue Beetle suit. Another addition was the original Blue Beetle suit worn by the first person to take up the mantle, Dan Garrett.
The final easter came when Uncle Rudy called Batman a fascist. Given that “Blue Beetle” is set to be in James Gunn’s new DCU post Flashpoint, this could be referring to the Batman of “The Brave and the Bold”.
Thoughts
“Blue Beetle” looks outstanding and could be the first steps to a DC comeback. This trailer definitely raised anticipation for the film and we cannot wait to see it when it releases in theaters August 18th.
