The true launch of the DC Universe will arrive with “Superman: Legacy”. James Gunn had announced back in early December of 2022 that he was writing a Superman film which has now been titled “Superman: Legacy”.
James Gunn Involvement
During the DC slate press reveal event on January 30th, both Gunn and Peter Safran gave some insights on the upcoming film. Peter Safran said the following,
“James is currently writing it. We’re hoping that he will direct it. It’s not an origin story. It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.”

While Gunn has not finished writing it, he mentioned he was also taking heavy inspiration from Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman series. Given how busy Gunn has been as co-CEO of DC Studios, it may be difficult for him to direct the project but clearly Safran and other higher ups want him to do so. Gunn also confirmed that he is currently going for a PG-13 rating when writing the film.
Casting
Since Henry Cavill is no longer playing Superman, Gunn and Safran will be on the hunt to find their new Man of Steel. However, Gunn made it clear over Twitter that they won’t be casting yet. Back in early January he said the following,
“My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t.”

However that won’t stop us from putting out our fancasts out there. Our top fancast is David Corenswet. We think he would embody the persona of Clark Kent and definitely have the look of a young Superman. However, DC Studios could cast an unknown actor which could also be a great decision.
Release Date
“Superman: Legacy” has received a release date and is set to hit theaters July 11th, 2025. We cannot wait to see how James Gunn and Peter Safran handle the new Man of Steel as the center of their DCU.
