Tension Brews in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

3 minutes, 16 seconds Read

The highly anticipated sequel for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” titled “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has just received a brand new trailer teasing an intense ride for the upcoming film.

Story

The synopsis for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” goes as follows,

“After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders. He must soon redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

Sony Pictures

The trailer begins with Miles trying to balance his personal and superhero life and starting to fail on the personal side. Miles encounters a new foe calling himself The Spot, but he comes off a little more goofy than expected. Gwen then brings Miles to meet the Spider-Society and encounters Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099. Miles wants to join the Spider-Society but Miguel says he cannot for unknown reasons.

Earth-199999

Miguel also mentions something very interesting that ties this franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Miguel angrily talks about the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” mentioning how Doctor Strange and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker screwed with the multiverse. He also designates the MCU as Earth-199999. This is a reference to heavy fan conspiracies that the MCU is not really an adaptation of the comics but rather a part of it in a live action version of storytelling. The main comic universe goes by Earth-616 but the MCU has recently given itself that same designation to shut down this theory. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” decided to comedically play off this and designate it Earth-199999 anyway for true fans.

The Choice

We then see that Miles is faced with a choice to either save his father from his death or save the multiverse. Miles argues that a Spider-Man can save everyone but the Uncle Ben card quickly comes into play to trump that statement. It looks like Miles will choose to save his father over everyone else which is what causes all of the Spider-People to chase after him as seen in the previous trailer.

Death?

(Possible Spoilers)

One interesting long shot shows Gwen holding a possibly dead Peter Parker in her arms. At first we thought this was the Peter of her universe that became the Lizard. However when taking a closer look, this Peter is wearing a Spider suit and sweatpants meaning it could actually be Peter B. Parker. It would be very interesting to see if they kill him off after immediately becoming a father to Mayday Parker.

Battle of Heroes

Finally we see more of the traffic showdown between Miles and Miguel and the pure intensity of it. This looks to be the most interesting dynamic of the upcoming film with Spider-Man 2099 serving more as an antagonist to Miles than a hero. Spider-Man 2099 is almost scary and is definitely a threat to Miles.

Spider-People

This trailer also gave us some more looks at the Spider-People. We got new looks at Spider-Man India, Spider-Punk, Jessica Drew, PlayStation Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider, obviously Spider-Man 2099 and so many more. One of the best bits of the trailer came from seeing all the Spider-People recreate the iconic pointing meme and once again showing the scale of the film.

Animation

Somehow they have topped the animation from the previous film which was essentially perfect. It had a new artistic feel that brings in many different elements from Spider-Man history while maintaining the same tone of the first.

Thoughts

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is shaping up to be one of the best comic book movies of the year and could possibly be better than the first. We cannot wait to see this movie in theaters June 2nd.
